Will Juanita Bynum’s High Profile Domestic Violence Incident Impact Women in the Church?

Evangelist and gospel singer Juanita Bynum, who was involved in a high-profile domestic violence incident and has filed for divorce as a result, said she would focus her ministry on helping victims of domestic violence.

In an interview Wednesday on “The Tom Joyner Morning Show,” Bynum said she had been in abusive relationships in the past and needed “to take some classes this time” to determine why she was attracted to troubled relationships, adding that she wanted to use her situation to help other women who are similarly addicted figure out how to leave their abusers once and for all.

“We become embarrassed about a lot of things,” Bynum said about high-profile people like herself who find themselves in difficult situations. “But instead of being embarrassed, I’m looking at it as a social contribution.”

Bynum’s husband, Thomas W. Weeks III, is accused of attacking his televangelist wife in a hotel parking lot on the night of Aug. 21. According to a divorce petition filed Monday in Ware County, where Bynum has a home, Weeks was accused of choking, pushing and stomping her. He was charged with aggravated assault and making terroristic threats and has been ordered not to have contact with Bynum.

Randy Kessler, one of Weeks’ attorneys, said Tuesday his client would contest the divorce petition and is considering whether to accuse Bynum of cruel treatment.
