KRS One’s Family Cancels Public Memorial

KRS-ONE KRS Ones Family Cancels Public Memorial

The family of rap pioneer KRS-One has cancelled a planned New York City memorial that was to pay tribute to the rapper’s stepson, Randy Hubbard Parker, who committed suicide earlier this month.

In a statement released Thursday, the family cited “personal reasons” as the cause behind the cancellation. “If the hundreds of letters and responses to the annoucement of the passing of our son are any indication, we know through you, his life and spirit will forever be celebrated and live on,” the statement explained.

The family went on apologize for any incovenience the cancellation may cause and hoped the public would be understanding. “We extend our apologies to all who have to our support, volunteered your time and services and planned to attend the service,” they said. “We trust that you understand and respect our decision.”

Randy Hubbard Parker was found dead of an apparent suicide in his Atlanta home the weekend of July 6. According to a statement released by his mother, Simone Parker, shortly after his death, the 23-year-old had been suffering from severe depression. The Parker family held a private memorial service in Florida on July 17 on what would have been Randy’s 24th birthday, and had announced plans to hold a New York memorial.

Despite the cancellation, the family thanked fans for their outpouring of sympathy. “We continue to be deeply moved by your tremendous expressions of kindness and will forever hold you in our hearts and thoughts,” they expressed. “May you continue to celebrate your life as you have celebrated our son’s.”
