A national group of black churches is calling for a minister accused of beating his televangelist wife to be suspended from the ministry. Thomas Weeks III, known to his followers as Bishop Weeks, is charged with aggravated assault and making terroristic threats for an alleged attack on his wife, Juanita Bynum. Police say Bynum was attacked outside a hotel near Atlanta’s airport. Weeks heads Global Destiny Ministries. The Washington-based National Black Church Initiative says Weeks’ Global Destiny Ministries is not part of its network, but that it considers the charges against him harmful to the entire
Christian church. The coalition, which works to address racial health disparities and problems in black families, sees Weeks’ alleged actions as “morally wrong and reprehensible.”
The Reverend Anthony Evans, president of the N-B-C-I, says Weeks should take a 3-year sabbatical to get himself together. Evans says domestic violence is a “scourge that rages on” in our churches.
