Eastwood Fires Back At Spike Lee

OOOOOH, GEEZER fight! Okay, so Spike Lee isn’t technically in his golden years, but we’re just thrilled to write about a feud that doesn’t involve Rosie O’Donnell or the tanorexic nitwits from “The Hills.”

Lee, you may remember, admonished Oscar-winning director Clint Eastwood last month for Eastwood’s failure to include African-American soldiers in his recent companion films about World War II, “Flags of our Fathers” and “Letters from Iwo Jima.”

In an interview with Britain’s Guardian newspaper, Eastwood hit back, saying that black soldiers didn’t raise the American flag on Mount Suribachi, immortalized in the iconic photograph. (”Letters” is about the battle from the Japanese perspective, and we’re guessing African-Americans were in short supply.)

“Has he ever studied the history?” Eastwood says. “The story is ‘Flags of Our Fathers,’ the famous flag-raising picture, and they didn’t do that. If I go ahead and put an African-American actor in there, people’d go: ‘This guy’s lost his mind.’ I mean, it’s not accurate.” Then, referring to Lee, he adds, “A guy like him should shut his face.” Snap, grandpa!

Phillippe and Cornish go public

Ryan Phillippe stepped out publicly for the first time with girlfriend Abbie Cornish, his co-star in “Stop-Loss” and, more infamously, the supposed “other woman” in his split with Reese Witherspoon.

Phillippe accompanied Cornish to the 2008 Australian in Film Breakthrough Awards (yes, the alleged hussy is an Aussie), where she was honored for her films, which also include “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” and “A Good Year.”

“They were adorable,” a guest tells People. “He had his arm around her and they were cozy and comfortable.”

Moynahan on single motherhood

Actress Bridget Moynahan won’t talk about ex-boyfriend, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, but she does say that finding out she was pregnant in the aftermath of their breakup was initially traumatic.

In an interview in Harper’s Bazaar, she says, “When you’re suddenly pregnant and no one is standing by your side, even if you’re in your 30s, it’s a hard conversation. I’m a traditional girl, and I believe in marriage, and I just always thought that’s the way I’d be doing this. For a moment, it was hard for me to accept that this was the way I was going to have a family.”

But she also says being a single mom ensures a higher-quality dating pool because a potential boyfriend “understands straight off the bat it’s a package.”

Parker’s engaging theory

You’re probably sick of hearing about “Sex and the City” by this point, but Sarah Jessica Parker had an interesting take on the film’s box office success: “What strikes me is that this isn’t a cultural phenomenon — calling it that diminishes it,” she tells Entertainment Weekly. “You can’t say our movie is breaking numbers internationally and call that a ‘cultural thing.’ It’s women. And women are not a phenomenon. We want to read good books, see good television, and go to the cinema. We want to be engaged.”

Celebrity shorts

–People reports Vin Diesel and his girlfriend, model Paloma Jimenez, have quietly become parents of a baby girl. (Having intimate knowledge of childbirth, we are betting there was nothing quiet about it.)

–Shania Twain thanked her fans for their words of encouragement following her surprise split from her music producer husband, Robert “Mutt” Lange. “Your overwhelming support reminds me to smile, no matter how deep the pain and to always be grateful for all the beautiful blessings in my life,” she writes on her website. “I have so much to say but I know the best way for me to speak is through my music. This is my therapy, my passion, and my love. I look forward to sharing it with all of you as I begin this new journey.”
