I've tried to do this the "free" way and it was an incredible pain. I went through several programs of varying intelligence, and tried a lot of demos which would watermark my videos - which was fine because after all I was evaluating them.

Cannot say if this is the best solution, but here's what I decided upon:

Use DVD Shrink to create a ISO backup of the DVD. It's an older freeware program, but it's still out there and one of the best.

After creating the ISO, I used Jesterware DVD to PSP to convert that main movie file to a playable, high-quality H264 compressed file for PSP use. It's a UK program so the only thing is it asks what framerate my DVD is recorded in: 24 or 30 fps.

There's a lot of other tweaks which are a bit daunting but sometimes more helpful than I first thought - like the "inverse telecine" feature which restores an artifically-fattened to 30fps back to the 24fps it was recorded in. Useful for some cartoons. Heh.

Anyway, sadly, the Jesterware program was not free. You can evaluate it for free with the usual watermark of course. I did so, and in the end, it was worth the purchase price of approximately $30. They even took PayPal.

There's a heap of programs out there, so hopefully someone else has a free solution that will work for you.

I have a complete tutorial- with a video on my PSP forum on how to do this. Using DVD shrink and PSP Video 9- both are free. Plus- you can get more help there as everyone is very helpful ;) There's also some other links for programs if you want to rip directly from the DVD to the PSP- but you only get 5 free rips before you have to buy it- check it out- it's worth it!
