Actually, they have very little to do with each other (with Maggie Gyllenhal taking over from Katie Holmes, it might even be confusing to watch the first one!). Dark Knight is definitely watchable without any sort of preparatory viewing/reading.

No, because the story line is basically easy to follow without seeing the first one. I wouldn't suggest it though, because there's a lot about Bruce Wayne you should know about in order to get his inner psyche. Honestly, it's one of the deepest plot lines I've seen in a while. Both movies touch on fear, justice and their relations to good and evil on a level that exceeds so many stories and movies I've gone through in my life.

If you really need to see the Dark Knight now, I say go ahead. You will be able to enjoy it now without the backstory, but I suggest watching Batman Begins as soon as possible!

No, I went to see The Dark Knight at the midnight showing on thursday, and I hadn't seen Batman Begins. I got the entire storyline. I'm actually going to see it again because it was so amazing.

No you don't but it's also a great movie that you should consider seeing. All you need to know is the villian from the first movie, the scarecrow makes a small appearance and katie holmes' chracter (rachel, the only person other than alfred and morgan freeman to know that bruce is batman) is now played by maggie gylenhal. Also morgan freeman's character is explained in the first movie, basically he makes the suits and weapons for bruce and runs wayne enterprise.
Enjoy the dark knight, it was a spectacular movie!!!
