Default What is the difference between heavy metal and hard rock?

What is the difference between heavy metal or just metal and hard rock. I like hard rock but I don't like metal. Three days grace and Chevelle are examples of hard rock by the definition I am thinking of. And slipknot is metal. But I also like this band called Disturbed and they have been described as metal, but I don't like metal. What is the difference between hard rock and metal?

No $hitknot is not metal. It is $hit rock like AxCx. Hard Rock and Heavy Metal are very similar, but the differece is the extra speed, heaviness, and complexity of metal that hard rock doesn't have.

Hey, if you think $hitknot is metal, then what is Britney Spears? Brutal death metal? LOL, what is this world coming to anyway?

Metal is far more extreme in volume, speed & lyrical content.
Hard rock has an edge, but never really crosses that extreme line that metal does.

Heavy Metal is bands like Pantera and old Metallica. Hard Rock are bands like Three Days Grace and Velvet Revolver. I think Heavy Metal is faster and has harsher vocals than Hard Rock.

And to answer your other question, Disturbed actually claim to be Hard Rock, not metal, which is what they are sometimes called.

Slipnot and Disturbed are not metal... They are hard rock. Metal is more, well, metal sounding... It's hard to explain. Like old school Metallica and Pantera... It has to do with the way the guitar and drums sound together. It's faster and harsher sounding.

Sometime I start to wonder that myself. Disturbed says there more Hard Rock.

There are some geners of Metal that aren't considered Metal. For example Nu-Metal. Alot of people that don't listen to MTV metal (thats what I call it) don't consider Nu-Metal metal at all. Nu-Metal is bands like Slipknot and Korn.

So anyways I think the dif between Metal and Hard rock lies in the ear of the beholder or what you think.

Silly people, no matter how bad Slipknot and Disturbed are, they are still metal.

If the only thing you know about metal is slipknot and disturbed, then you really have no idea whether you like metal or not, there are many different styles which come under the metal umbrella, and to me it sounds like you haven't listened to a single one of them, and to answer your question metal and rock split away from each other some time in the 70's, other than that it's too difficult to explain.

son, you have no idea what heavy metal is.

heavy metal is far different from hard rock because of the possibilities of its sound.

listen to these songs and tell me if they sound the same at all:

hard rock is just heavier rock, metal is usually very technical, fast, agressive, and loud.

i suggest you grow a pair and start listening to some SLAYER!!
