Default About Heavy Metal, why do some people today???

Don't consider bands like Black Sabbath and such to be Metal anymore? I don't get it. I'm 26 and I know they are Metal. Oldschool Metal ofcourse. It does not sound like that today. But it still is and always will be Metal. Some people my age or younger think that Metal bands of yesturday somehow get demoted or downgraded to Hard Rock over time. Thats ridiculouse! Metal is Metal. Not saying anythign bad about hard rock. You know what I mean. Howcome some people don't consider modern metal band Disturb to be Meta when they clearly are? Whats going on here??? Is everyone a bunch of morons musically. I don't even play. I am a visual artist if that means anything.

You will always find someone that classifies their music....differently that you... I listen to what i like...I don't need to classify it for me to like it or for anyone to hate it....People's definition of 'metal' are all different...
Okay... you say Metal is Metal... so by that....bands like Poison and Slayer are in the same genre....Some will say yes, some will say no....

Alot of people hear "heavy metal" and think of hairbands that pirated that genre in the eighties. That just happens to be really crappy metal.

Yeah I agree that Black Sabbath is metal; they are considered "classic metal", along with The Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Motorhead, Judas Priest, etc. However i think harping on what every band is classified as isn't really important and doesn't make the band any greater or worse. The only time I get annoyed with this is when people call Green Day "Punk rock".

They're just stupid....To me, bands like Sabbath and Iron Maiden will always be Metal. They just say that because they want to stay 'current'. Its so stupid, theres still millions of people today that love and listen to those bands, but dont consider them to be 'Heavy' enough to be metal. By the way, Disturbed is hardly metal. Its pretty close though. It's more like an alternative to metal.

They don't really like metal. They like bands that are popular. Without Black Sabbath, Dio, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, ect. There wouldn't be any metal today.

There are so many different genres under the rock label, let alone all the genres there are for metal!!! People now-a-days put way too much emphasis on what genre a band is...basically I say "if it sounds good who cares how to classify it." Most of the really good 'metal' or 'rock' bands out there you can't classify under one genre because they are so unique or play so many different styles.

I think that a lot of the younger kids who listen to metal think that it has to be super fast or has to have lots of screaming, that is not what metal is all about. Black Sabbath are pretty much the inventors of the metal genre and will ALWAYS BE METAL!! You are right!!

Anyways, like I said there is a fine line between metal and hard rock and a lot of bands can be classified as both.

The idea is that metal must be the most extreme form of music on the planet, and bands like Black Sabbath while heavy are not the most extreme music being produced. Of course I agree with you that if it was metal when it came out, it is still metal now. The kids like to think that what they have is unique and different and doesn't belong to the past in any way.

There is a dvd you can buy called "Metal: A Headbangers Journey" It is a documentary on the Metal culture that was done by an anthropologist/metal enthusiast. FYI anthropology is the study of human culture for those that don't know.

Anyway, he created an organizational chart for the different genre's of Metal. Think of it as the family tree of Metal. And in the root of this tree are Black Sabbath, Zepplin, Blue Cheer, and others, and they specifically talk about the origins of Metal and most that were interviewed, deemed Sabbath to be the Grandfathers of Metal.

So run out and get you a copy of this and then your Metal knowledge will be increased 10 fold, plus you will have a reference to back up your claims to those that are ignorant.

I wouldn't get too hung up on tags and labels, after all, good music is still good music, whatever it's called. Where it falls down is when music by the likes of Rhianna and Beyonce are referred to as RnB, rather than the more original RnB from bands such as The Animals and Dr Feelgood. I have even heard pre-teen kids referring to the former as 'fake RnB'.

I like classic metal much better than today's metal, if that means anything.

I'm 17 and I know that Black Sabbath is classic metal, and one of the innovators of metal music. However, Disturbed isn't metal, they are hard rock. The best way to determine whether a band is metal or not is to go to

I'm the same age as you, and I grew-up listening to Classic Rock. I was always told that bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple are classed as 'Original {or Classic} Heavy Metal', because they were the first acts to go beyond hard Rock into a darker and heavier sound. Unfortunately, many people our age {and younger, and even some older people} can't accept that, and relegate them back to hard-rock.

Genres are subjective. I know someone on here who classes my beloved Mike Oldfield as 'Space Rock', which I find to be totally ridiculous. He most certainly does *not* fit in that genre {his music is Prog Rock, Pop-Prog, and Ambient}.

See ~ it's all a matter of individual opinion...

I was introduced to metal as being 80's thrash, so it's hard for me to accept a less heavy band like Sabath as metal, even though I know they are.

Disturbed is not a metal band. I don't give a crap what you say.
