Because the lyrics sometimes are very depressing or "emo" people sing it. It's a very stupid stereo type , just ignore them all.

because generally the type of people that listen to it DO cut their wrist. but it doesn't mean they cut while listening. But if you listen to emo music it doesn't mean you slit your wrists

It's just a bad stereotype. Emo isn't even really a genre of music. It's more a lifestyle and the people in that lifestyle tend to listen to a certain kind of music.

People think that because you listen to that music, you cut your wrists. This is because people have this misconceived idea that all people under banner of 'emo' self harm. Infact, people that self-harm are called self-harmers. I've been called emo so many times I cant remember, and I listen to metal for crying out loud.
Yeah I kinda like My Chemical Romance, but that makes no difference. 'Emo' music these days is terrible, if you even want to call it emo. It;s more like soft rock/alternative. I hate that stereotype and all who use it.

Honey I had to read some of the answers before I could figure out what kind of music it was...I still don't know and I will stay with the good old rock and roll!!!..And any one who cuts there wrist needs help no matter what kind of music they listen too...Music is to make you feel good not want to kill your self!!

I just listened to couple of examples of Emo. The whiny quality in the voices, the angst and anguish. I thought, "Boo hoo, the overwhelming horrors of being a teen. Wait til they have kids and a mortgage". But then, my generation had Jim Morrison who once said, "People fear death even more than pain. It's strange that they fear death. Life hurts a lot more than death. At the point of death, the pain is over. Yeah, I guess it is a friend". All that aside, I think the Emo style is a sad waste of talent.
