| learn the symbols...going on the internet is probably the easiest way to do that. for exmaple, learn what major and minor mean...what a 7th cord is...and all the types that you normally see in your songs. i recommmend writing out the notes in each cord just above the cord symbol on your sheet music *in pencil* and then just practice playing those notes ina random order. dont worry if you hit a note that isnt in the chord. thats the good thing about jazz, its okay to "break the rules" or throw in a note that doesnt fit too well...it just creates disinance (really not sure about the spellign there) but yeah, try doing this on your own time before pratices so you get abit more comfortable with the notes and remembering : " oh this chrod is coming up...i better play some of these notes.." if you end up comming up with something that sounds good, write it down either in standard notation or in tab (although im sure you director would prefer if it was in standard notation) when you get more used to just playing quarter notes, try throwing in 2 eigth notes...or a dotted eight and a 16th, gives a nice swing feel. yeah, youll probably feel awkward when you first start playing that song, but youll get used to it. i know what its like! ii always though, "can everyone else tell that id ont have a part and that im jsut totally making up this stuff?!?!?" haha and they cant, or i mean they probaably cant depends on the level of your band but they are probaably more focused on playing their own parts so theyll jsut listen for the tempo from you again, dont freak out if you accidently play a "wrong note", its really okay in jazz! again, go online and learn abit of theory of chord symbols, itll help you out big time. and not just with this songs, with other as well! ohhh...p.s. usually in jazz songs, chord progressions will repeat themselves quite often, so really itll jsut be the same thing oevr and over again, so learning the chord symbols for the song really isnt as bad as you think! | If you cant play off of this, then you are not ready for jazz. Get a teacher and learn more about your instrument. Powered by Yahoo Answers |
