![]() | 10 Worst Moments in Sports The Mitchell Report Released Dec. 13, 2007 While news of steroid use in Major League Baseball has hit the headlines before, the Mitchell Report has named 85 players, including Cy Young winners and MVPs, in its investigation into performance-enhancing drug use in the league. In addition to the big names identified in the report, former Sen. George Mitchell concluded from his 20-month investigation that over the past decade, steroid use in baseball was "widespread" and the "response by baseball was slow to develop and was initially ineffective." ![]() | NHL Lockout 2004-2005 When the NHL shut down for 310 days, starting Sept. 16, 2004, it was the first time that a major professional sports league in North America canceled a complete season due to a labor dipute. The NHL and the players were in dispute over a proposed salary cap. It was the second lockout in NHL history (the first in the 1994-1995 season), but much more consequential. It was also the first year a Stanley Cup was not awarded. Major League Baseball players also striked against a proposed salary cap in 1994 and the World Series was cancelled for the first time since 1904. ![]() | Bertuzzi's Assault on Moore March 8, 2003 Vancouver Canucks' Todd Bertuzzi took hockey's on-ice fights to a near-fatal level when he assaulted Colorado Avalanche's Steve Moore. Moore had taken out the Canucks' team captain, and the league's leading scorer, Markus Näslund, in a move the Canucks' general manager called a "headhunting hit." When the two teams faced off the next month, Bertuzzi tried to start a fight, but was rebuffed. He grabbed Moore by his shirt, punched him and threw him headfirst into the ice. Moore, left, suffered three fractured neck verterbrae, facial cuts and a concussion. Bertuzzi was suspended from the NHL indefinitely, but was allowed to return in 2005. There is currently a civil suit, filed by Moore, pending against Bertuzzi and the Cancucks. (Chuck Stoody/ AP Photo ) To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 15 or greater. ![]() | Pacers v. Pistons Brawl Nov. 21, 2004 When the Detroit Pistons beat the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Pacers and their fans had to wait through the off-season for the rematch. The Pacers were on their way to a win in the Nov. 19 game, leading 97-82 with less than a minute remaining, when Pacers' Ron Artest fouled Pistons' Ben Wallace. Wallace retaliated with a shove, which soon turned into a multiplayer fray. Artest, left, charged the stands after a fan threw a cup at him. Artest was suspended for the remainder of this season, while eight other members of the Pacers and Pistons were disciplined after the unprecedented display of violence. ![]() | Dale Earnhardt's Fatal Crash Feb. 18, 2001 Dale Earnhardt was named NASCAR's No.2 racer in 1998, the year he won the Daytona 500. However, Earnhardt, also known as "the Intimidator," met a tragic fate on the race course three years later. In the last lap of the Daytona 500, Earnhardt was neck-in-neck with Sterling Marlin when the cars bumped. Earnhardt's car slid toward the outside wall, and Ken Schrader (36) slammed into Earnhardt (3). Earnhardt's death was the fourth NASCAR driver's death in the nine months leading up to the crash, prompting NASCAR to start requiring head and neck restraints. ![]() | Monica Seles Stabbing Tennis star Monica Seles was at the top of her game in April 1993: She had won three consecutive French Open titles and two consecutive Australian Open and U.S. Open titles. At a quarterfinal match in Hamburg, Germany, 6,000 spectators watched as a 38-year-old man rushed the court and stabbed Seles in her back during a changeover. At first, some speculated it was because of Seles' Serbian roots given the conflict in Yugoslavia, but later reports suggested the mentally disturbed man was a fan of Steffi Graf, who had lost to Seles in three out of the past four Grand Slam matches.
