| You practice very hard, all the time. You go to school for music performance, and you work extremeley hard. It's not easy! Practice, practice practice. Powered by Yahoo Answers |

| Becoming a concert pianist means practicing every day for about 8 hours(of course not everybody does so, but those who really want it do it), the exams here (in vienna) are really difficult and the people I know work really really hard.. I know one who gets up at 8 am, starts playing, makes a break for lunch and a little nap (~1 hour) and then continues playing until 10 o clock. And they have a lot of concerts with their music class which means that they have to be really fast at learning a new piece. Powered by Yahoo Answers |

| It requires a enormous amount of dedication, and a true passion for classical music. You will need to practice for long periods of time, per day, learning as much as possible, including theory and harmony, doing exams, etc. Training usually begins when one is a child. It really has to become your number one interest in life. A friend of mine is a classical concert pianist and when he was a student, he was practicing six hours a day, sometimes more, and his entire life has centered around performance standards. | PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE 1. Learn music theory, scales, arpeggios, inversion, modes, cadences, chords, etc. 2. Read up on the great pianists and learn how they became famous. A little inspiration never hurts. 3. Get a teacher. This person will point out any mishaps that may hinder you from reaching your dream, as well as being a good reference. 4. Most concert pianists either attend conservatories at some point in their careers, a conservatory within a university (Indiana), or an outstanding music school at a local university, but then there are others who did not go to school and are still considered great. The amount of education is up to you. 5. Learn how to teach it. You will become a better pianist if you can teach it because then you will see your craft from two viewpoints. 6. Drink a lot of water. This is true for any musician. Not only is it healthy, but it cleanses the system of any toxins which enables quicker reflexes (a must for pianists). 7. Learn a bit about tuning. I recommend Franz Mohr's book "My Life With the Great Pianists." He was the personal technician to Vladimir Horowitz and I met him last summer; a very sweet and knowledgeable man. Also, it will save you money if a note or two goes out of tune and you can fix it yourself. 8. Learn as much material as you can, and don't just limit yourself to classical styles. Learn some jazz, blues, gospel, new age, etc. Sight-read a piece a day. 9. Find a hobby that makes you work with your hands and wrists whether it be ping-pong, frisbee, or crocheting, and strengthen these parts of your body. 10. Never NEVER over-practice. Keep those wrists relaxed and flexible. 11. Take music history into account. Learn about your instrument and its predecessors. Study the different genres that are written for piano. 12. Learn about the makes of pianos. This will come in handy in the future. 13. Get to know people that are pianists. Participate in competitions. 14. Perform as often as you can. 15. This may sound crazy, but learn organ as well. If you know how to play those pipes, you can get a job almost anywhere. 16. Keep persevering. Don't ever give up your dream! 17. Have fun in the process! The best of luck to you! Powered by Yahoo Answers |
