I guess it depends on the demand for their music. That also determines where they tour, as well.

The Beatles didn't play any concerts from 1966 onwards, and yet are still one of the best selling bands ever.

However, it's a lot harder to stay famous without touring, and pretty much impossible to become famous without playing concerts.

No. But many stars want to so they can promote their CDs, in which then people will buy more of it, hence more money for them.

But like Britney for her Blackout CD, I don't believe she went on tour for it.

No. But that's where they make their money. Most artists on major labels really don't make anything off of album sales since they don't own the rights to the music. They make their money off of touring and merchandise sales generated by touring.

Any decent rapper tours because hip hop was created to be experienced live. Recording albums only came about later on.
