If you drop out of school during a semester in which you have received a Pell Grant, you will be required to pay some portion of that money back. You will not be able to qualify for any additional aid until the money has been paid in full.

The Department of Education says this:

"Aid is awarded to a student under the assumption that the student will attend an institution for the entire period for which the assistance is awarded. When a student ceases academic attendance prior to the end of that period, the student may no longer be eligible for the full amount of funds that the student was originally scheduled to receive."

The rule that determines exactly the amount that you must repay is somewhat complicated - there are two main factors involved.

The questions are:

At what point in the semester did you drop out?

and

What portion of the Pell funds did you use to pay tuition?

You must notify your financial aid office that you intend to drop out - they will be able to compute the money that needs to be returned to the Department of Education. Your school will have to return a portion of the money that you paid to them for tuition, and you, personally, will have to return a portion of the money that you did not apply directly to tuition.

Your financial aid office will be your best resource - if there are hardship appeals available to you, they will be the ones who will know how to go about filing such an appeal.

Definitely get this squared away though - your school must certify your attendance to the Department of Education at the end of the semester - if you have dropped out, the Department will be told, and they will come looking for you, to arrange for repayment. This is not a process that you want to go through - especially if you have hope of qualifying for future funds.

if you drop out on a pell grant you will need to pay back for any class you drop out of.

Example if you drop out of 4 classes at 300$
youll need to pay back 1200
