I think it has something to do with the Decepticons not wanting to hide...I think Megatron at one point during the second film mentions something while on the roof top...saying how he was tired of hiding his true face...and that now was the time humans felt his wrath. The Fallen was going to have his revenge...blah blah. There's a lot of things that don't make sense.

I thought no one would ever ask this question! Bravo to you! I suppose they could be anything they choose like the toaster and other kitchen applicances (remember)? Look, it just makes the movie more interesting (and ridiculous) to add these quirks in the plot. How can anyone dispute your supposation? You are right on!

Michael Bay wanted to stay away from the whole "mass shifting" thing so it seems to me that the robots have to find something similar to their own mass to transform into. Megatron is way to big to transform into a human and he wouldn't because, "No more hiding, the time as come to make our presence known." Or something like that.
