the m stand for make more money from reality tv shows and stupid stunt shows than music videos television..and oh yeah we play lots more commercials than music television..

Once upon a time in a land far far away it was called MTV (Music Television) because the network actually played music videos ALL day.

It's an acronym for Music Television (MTV) since it used to be a (nearly) 24 hour music video and/or music-related programming network. Personally, I think they should consider changing their name since they rarely play music videos anymore.
