I'm not into the whole religion part of the guy who wrote it, but Dianetics is a book on the science of mental health.
Why is it so bad?

Its not.
Just like anything, there are good parts and silly parts.

Because it ain't science. It's nonsense, and is used as the basis of a mind control cult.

Theoretically, it is not so bad if it is actually taken as a book on mental health.
But...the problem is the "whole religion part" of it that you mentioned. Dianetics is the basis for Scientology, which is essentially a religious cult (really no better or worse than Christianity, I just use the world cult because when it is a smaller group of people worshipping/practicing together it is called a cult. When it becomes a much larger society that extends into multiple churches, it is called a religion...it's all essentially the same thing though..cult, religion)
