I am pretty sure that it affects our personality and how we live our lives, but in what way does it do this?
I am talking about music in relation to the listener, not the song writer.

It depends... People have to "Feel" the music (in every sense of the word) to have it totally effect their lives. If you can't feel it, find something new!

It has to inspire you to be a person you like. It can make you want to play an instrument, or write something! If it makes you feel phony, then it still isn't for you.

Its hard to explain... Its just this whole thing about how music "Touches you" and "Makes you feel and think".

Not for me anymore. I think teens/early 20s are more prone to that. Though, of course, not in every case.

But in *my* experience, I've seen it consistently w/ this group:

Music is a reflection of the music writer's feelings and how they feel.
It's a reflection of the kind of things (music) you like

I know how it affected my life 6 years ago. I was into punk music...I went to shows a lot, and got drunk a lot because in that "scene" it's the "cool" thing to do...So I got into some trouble drinking. I once got arrested and brought home by the police. I got grounded for a very long time. A number of various incidents also happened from alcohol poisioning to waking up in random places. It wasn't a good thing...But I was easily manipulated by the people who were around me back then...

Now I know you can listen to whatever I want without having to think I have to fit into some "stereotype".

i love to listen to john mayer. i'm pretty laid back most of the time and that's how a lot of his music is too, so his music reflects my personality pretty well i guess

Hmmm... my diverse tastes show many sides of me. I am a puzzel!

Manson appeals to my darker twisted side. ( for example , I adore the song Para Noir , nuf said! )

My love of darkwave and ethereal goth shows that I do have a pretty dark side.

The fact that I love rock and the more aggressive the better, shows my rebelious side. I love the attitude of rock and roll.

My love of some sappy pop bands show that I am a hopeless optimist , as well.

I am not saying that the music influences me at all, but my choices reflect the many facets of my personality.

Personality I think definitely goes hand-in-hand with what you like to listen to. It all comes down to what your tastes & preferences are, which are one of the many contributing factors to your personality. I definitely am someone who can adapt my personality to any situation I'm faced with, and that would probably explain why I can look to some very eclectic songs, artists, and genres to satisfy my "musical craving" of the moment (and believe me, that changes so frequently it's borderline A.D.D.).

Lifestyle is not always shaped by what people listen to. In my opinion, every genre has your "stereotypical listener", as some touched on in their answers (with Fonzie's example being probably the best one). It's really up to you whether you want to join up and follow the pack, or if you choose to walk down your own little pathway. I know my music preference doesn't influence my lifestyle very much...I would not fair too well in the sex, drugs & rock 'n' roll lifestyle; however I do love going to an ear-drum busting rock concert whenever I have the chance. People who don't know me very well are usually shocked to learn not only what I listen to regularly, but just how much and how broad of a music taste & knowledge I have (although I have so much more to learn and consume...the beauty of music is that there's always more to search out -- you just have to be open-minded in addition to open-eyed!)
