Do you watch movies for entertainment value, or do you pick apart movies for artistic value? What kind of a movie watcher are you?

For me, I'm an entertainment value. I don't need the movie to win an Oscar for me to like it. Some of my friends pick apart movies and like very few movies because they're not epic or grand, and it gets irritating.

What are your thoughts on that? I mean I get irritated at really REALLY bad movies, but they don't all need to be pieces of flawless art. Right?

It depends on what kind of movie it is. Since I am in the military I watch war movies from a different perspective than say dramas. I tend to critically analyze them for factuality and errors more than I watch for entertainment, though I do it for both. For things like fantasy and science fiction, I just watch for entertainment.

I am somewhere in between. I guess I pick them apart more than I just sit back and enjoy them. But I think it's because so many movies have been sooooo baaaaaad recently.

It depends on the movie. But for me, it's not that clear cut, I "study"/appreciate both in any film. If you're watching The Dark Knight, for instance, there are elements of both here. You can appreciate it's artistic efforts and symbolism. And there is an entertainment value.

Most great movies have both. Godfather, Shawshank Redemption, Casablanca, Pulp Fiction, Gone With the Wind, so on. All have an entertainment value and an artistic merit.

I LOVE independent movies that make you think or tell a compelling story. So there is a figurative "grand" scale here; one that makes your mind roll and heart sing. I also adore comic book movies like The Dark Knight, Superman: The Movie or other "geek" treasures like The Lord of the Rings which are done on an epic scale.

I watch them for both. I love movies that maybe just offer pure entertainment, and I love movies that I can analyze and have some artistic value. And hey why not both every once in a while? No they don't all have to be pieces of flawless art, because of course not all movies are like this.

I watch for entertainment.

Then I have to watch them again (work), and analyze them, what's working, what's not, how should it have been written differently, etc. That's a pain and definitely not enjoyable.

Movie snobs are annoying, aren't they? = )
