Outside World.

(Haha, i'm joking)

Well in the 1800's due to obvious reasons, the entertainment for them would be simply conversing with neighbours, friends, going outside, shopping, horse riding, sewing, cooking, playing board games (whatever was invented back then)

Please don't think computers, or internet, or even playing on their non-existant Ds's or w/e.

OK, this is kind of a complicated question because while the answers seem lame by todays standard, in the 1800's people had a lot less free time than they have today. In rural areas people
fished, told stories, read out of the bible (the book most families would own), read newspapers (which were not thrown away, but read over and over again) People also made luxury items like rocking chairs, lace, and leather goods in their amusement time.

Rural areas had periodic gatherings where people achieved a common goal such as a quilting bee, where women would gather to finish a quilt top that someone had made, barn raisings, where families gathered to build a barn in a short time, taffy pulls, and of course the most common things were church and "singings" where people gathered to sing the folk songs of their region together.

Towns tended to have more social opportunities, so entertainment often meant seeing a progress program put on by local school-children, spelling bees (all the community participated, not just children) Singing schools, taffy pulls, and many of the rural pursuits as well.

People really didn't get to do these things often however, as even during quiet times there was firewood to chop and store for winters, clothing to make, gardens and livestock to tend to, and endless tasks that you would face if you could no longer buy food, shelter and clothing, but had to make it for yourself.

It depends to some degree who "they" are. If you were educated and wealthy you might have a fine library for reading, you might write poetry, go for a picnic in the countryside. An interest in art might mean you would spend time in galleries or even trying your hand at landscape sketching or portrait painting.

The best entertainment, regardless of when, is usually a way to "escape" the ordinary routine, work and worries. So, think about ways you would use your imagination or the sort of things that would distract you from boredom... MUSIC may be one of the all time best.

Even poor and illiterate people in the rural areas can sing and dance. When I think of entertainment in the 1800s I can't imagine anything better than an old fashioned hoe-down... meaning you put down your hoe where you've been working in the field all week and go party. A good bonfire, fiddle playing, drinking and pretty much the same things rednecks still do for fun :)
