View Full Version : Do you think MTV ruins bands?

Sometimes I hate MTV. Countless times I have liked bands for months, then they end up on MTV, then worse, the popular radio stations. It makes me want to pull my hair out. The bands become sellouts and their sound becomes watered down. Then you have those obvnoxious people that are like "I LOVE THAT SONG!!!" when they only know it because everyone else does, when they wouldn't have given it the time and day before.

yeah but usually the band changes their sound so they CAN get played on mtv. I dont watch mtv. I only watch headbangers ball on mtv2...it's the only decent music show out there (atleast on the tv stations i get lol) and thats only one night a week :(

No I don't. I think bands ruin themselves. Theres nothing wrong with changing styles Queen has done it in almost all their albums.

I think they definitely have the ability to. Sometimes, a band will have a hardcore fanbase that found out about them through concerts, Myspace, other bands, the inside scene, whatever. People who are in the scene find them and like them.

The problem is that MTV can make it so that the once tightly knitted fanbase includes thousands who hear the song on TRL and claim to "love that song!" without having any knowledge of the band.

So, short answer: yes and no. It can, and sometimes does, but not always. Some bands remain true to themselves and their original fans.

Oh well, just find new bands to listen to. If they sell out then just be happy for them for making some cash. Although I agree, not many bands can maintain any decent music after that. That's why the Beatles are so loved. They sold out AND kept up their creativity!

MTV doesn't ruin bands. MTV simply advertises most bands/artists that sound like utteral crap.

No. Your own closed-mindedness may 'ruin' a band for you but someone else liking them shouldn't have any effect on you yet you're letting it get to you. If you like them, then why does it matter if I like them or not? You only ruin it for yourself if you stop listening to a favorite band just because they finally get popular, and that, in itself, makes you a poseur; not the band a sell-out. The band you 'pretended' to like means you were only posing to begin with. Because if you really were a true fan of the band; nothing, absolutely nothing or no one would sway you from liking them just the same. Not trying to be rude. That's my opinion on the whole sell-out/posing debate. :) Peace

MTV is just capitalizing on this viscious cycle. Most people like catchy songs that they can sing along to....even if it blows. Honestly I don't even listen to the radio and very rarely see a music video. My advice is to find new bands/artists. There are plenty of great musicians that aren't played to the masses. Here are a few of my favorite.
HIP HOP
The Roots
Dead Prez
Mos Def
ROCK
Mad Season
Portishead
System of a Down
Older ROCK
Black Sabbath (minus Ironman)

Don't you want the bands you like to make more records?

Isn't it more incentive for the record companies to put out more records by the bands you like if they sell better?

Changing their sound or not is up to the band, and though I can understand it maybe feeling a little less special when the band you're into is on the pulse of what's hip, isn't good music being spread to everyone a good thing? Isn't it good that more people are exposed to good music? Aren't you happy for the band that you enjoy so much, seeing them succeed? Does the number of copies a record sells change the way it sounds coming out of your speakers?

Not everyone could be there when said band was a local group, and everyone has to find out from somewhere. Who cares if it's from MTV. Personally, some of my favorite bands have broken up because they never quite broke through when they had great records left in them. Sure, it's cool to be able to refer people to someone new and what have you, but I don't get why people are so upset about "bandwagon fans." A better career and life for your artist of choice, why is it so bad?

Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of complaints about MTV, but I think in this case your anger is misplaced, and or doesn't make a ton of sense. You're not alone mind you, but I don't get the whole hating newer fans of a group thing, and changing your sound consciously is on the band, not the medium.

Yep, it's not a music channel, it's a"popular" channel. Why that kind of style (shows about rich people, especially stupid rich girls who b*tch about everything,) is popular I'll never understand.

MTV, the Disney channel, and cooperate media money machines are ruining rock n roll.
