Heath did a lot of research for his role as the Joker. He read up on a lot of psychopaths, locked himself in a dark room to get the right voice, mannerisms and laugh to make the character perfect. But he also had a lot going on. He wasn't able to see his daughter everyday like he had before and he Michelle split up. That on top of other things in his life made it hard for him to sleep. He received medication to help him and instead of following the directions on how to take them he took too many and he accidentally overdosed.

rumor has it that when he played that joker in the movie that he couldnt really shake the character and they say it did cause a part in his drug use to sleep, the roll supposidly really affected him so it ended up being a ACCIDENTAL over dose.
we lost a great actor.

His role probably did play a small part. He had an accidental overdose with alot of medications, the doctor gave him 6 or 8 bottles of prescriptions and doctors aren't even suppose to do that they were strong too. He had insomnia and was depressed because of his divorce with his wife.
