I haven't seen the Batman with Jack in a long time, but in my opinion you can't really compare the two. Heath did a lot more research in to psychopath's and what not in order to get in to his role. Jack didn't do that as much and therefore didn't play the role as dark as Heath portrayed it.
I think they were both great, but to say who was better... I guess Heath. He made the Joker believable as a maniac.

Heath ledger all the way man, though jack nicholson still made a good joker. For one thing, Ledger's joker showed more of the phsycopathic side of joker than nicholsons. His voice and laugh were more like the joker described in the comics. Though both movies are different. The original was more comic booky and the dark knight was more dark and sinister. So, both the jokers are different. They both did an outstanding job playing their joker roles. though i still liked ledger's better.

Why can't you just search Yahoo! Answers for the same questions and get some results from there?

This question has been asked a lot, you know.

Anyways, Heath Ledger got my vote.
A charming young fella. . . he he he . . .

Well, with the fact that Jack did not put enough effort to his role of the Joker.

Heath has put everything into his. He had an incredible knowledge of the Joker that he knew what to do for every situation that came to him.

I say Heath Ledger has put smiles into everyone's faces.

Jack's Joker gives you believability of being evil and have a good sense of humor.

Heath's Joker is comedic, but sometimes the things he does makes you feel guilty of laughing. And oddly enough, you don't know if you want to hate him or love him, or both.

Edge: Ledger.

I think Heath Ledger. I was recently reading 'The Dark Knight' trivia on imdb.com and I found these interesting:

-To prepare for his role as the Joker, Heath Ledger lived alone in a hotel room for a month, formulating the character's psychology, posture and voice (the last one he found most difficult to do). He started a diary, in which he wrote the Joker's thoughts and feelings to guide himself during his performance. He was also given Alan Moore's comic "Batman: The Killing Joke" and "Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth" to read. Ledger also took inspiration from A Clockwork Orange (1971)'s Alex and Sid Vicious.

-When asked, "Why Heath Ledger as the Joker?" Christopher Nolan said, "Because he's fearless."

AND, most of all this is why Mr. Ledger gets my vote:
-It's Sir Michael Caine's opinion that Heath Ledger beat the odds and topped Jack Nicholson's Joker from Batman (1989): "Jack was like a clown figure, benign but wicked, maybe a killer old uncle. He could be funny and make you laugh. Heath's gone in a completely different direction to Jack, he's like a really scary psychopath. He's a lovely guy and his Joker is going to be a **** of a revelation in this picture." Caine bases this belief on a scene where the Joker pays a visit to Bruce Wayne's penthouse. He'd never met Ledger before, so when Ledger arrived and performed he gave Caine such a fright he forgot his lines.
